Fabric Type Guide
Choosing the right fabric is the foundation of every high-quality garment. Different fabrics offer unique characteristics in terms of comfort, durability, weight, stretch, and appearance. Understanding these differences helps you select the best material for your clothing collection, ensuring the perfect balance of performance, style, and functionality.
What Is Fabric GSM?
GSM (Grams per Square Metre), also written as g/m², is the standard measurement used to indicate the weight of a fabric. It represents how many grams one square metre of fabric weighs and is one of the most important factors when selecting materials for garment production.
In general, fabrics with a higher GSM feel heavier, denser, and more durable, while lower GSM fabrics are lighter, softer, and more breathable. However, GSM does not directly measure fabric thickness, as different fibre types and fabric constructions can produce different thicknesses even at the same weight.
There is no “standard” GSM for clothing. The ideal fabric weight depends on the garment type, intended use, and desired appearance. Heavier fabrics require more raw material and longer production times, making them more expensive than lighter-weight alternatives.
Some fabrics, such as denim, are traditionally measured in ounces (oz), while most modern apparel fabrics use GSM. The two units can be easily converted—for example, 6 oz fabric is approximately equal to 203 GSM.
As a general guide, T-shirts are commonly made from fabrics ranging between 160 and 220 GSM. A 160 GSM fabric provides a lightweight, breathable feel that is ideal for everyday wear and warm climates, while a 220 GSM fabric offers a thicker, more structured, and premium feel. For oversized streetwear and luxury basics, many brands prefer fabrics weighing 240 GSM or above, whereas sportswear and activewear often use lighter fabrics to maximise comfort and flexibility.
